Awarding Ceremony of the 20th "Chinese Bridge" Competition

Awarding ceremony of the 20th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for undergraduates of Sri Lanka was held on the 02nd of July 2021 as an online event. .

The competition was sponsored by the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation of the Government of China. It was organised by the Confucius Institute of the University of Kelaniya. Confucius Institute of the University of Colombo and the Confucius Classroom of the Sabaragamuwa University are the Co-organizers.

Cadre Chair & Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, H. E. Qi Zhenhong, Ambassador of China to Sri Lanka,  Senior Lecturer Sudath Senarath, Dean- Faculty of Humanities, Dr. Dilrukshi Rathnayake, Head- Department of Modern Languages, Prof. Wimal Hewamanage, Director- Confucius Institute of the University of Colombo, Senior Lecturer Dr. Sampath Fernando, Dean- Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, Director- Confucius Classroom, Sabaragamuwa University, Mr. Liu Dong, Counsellor of the Cultural Section of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Sri Lanka, and many other honourable guests attended the ceremony.

"Chinese Bridge" consists of speech, talent, and written contests. Speech contest was held under the theme "One World-One Family". Talent competition was focused on Chinese culture. Written contest was based on cultural, religious, social, economic understanding related to China and language proficiency. Undergraduates from University of Kelaniya, University of Colombo, Sabaragamuwa University, University of Peradeniya, and University of Ruhuna participated. 03 winners were chosen from each contest. Winner was given the chance to participate in the final which will be held in China while the runner-up got the opportunity to watch it. All attendees of the final will be given a six-month scholarship and the winners of the final will receive a one-year scholarship of their preference by the Government of China.

Chalani Nishadi and Nipuni Supeshala from the University of Kelaniya secured the 03rd place in the speech contest while Ayoma Nilakshi from the University of Kelaniya placed as the runner-up. S. S. Randunuge from the Sabaragamuwa University was the winner of the speech contest. Nipuni Supeshala again secured the 03rd place in the talent competition. Hashini Jayawickrama and Odani Hemaransi placed as the runner-up and the winner, respectively. Overall championship was secured by the University of Kelaniya by securing first three places. Chalani Nishadi, Nipuni Supeshala and Odani Hemaransi placed as the 03rd, runner-up and the competition winner, respectively.

Confucius Institute of the University of Kelaniya has initiated this competition in 2011 and the "Chinese Bridge" has given the opportunity for students to improve language skills, share learning experiences and to continue intercultural cooperation.
