University of Kelaniya Teams Shine at the CFA Institute Research Challenge 2025
The University of Kelaniya made a remarkable mark in the prestigious CFA Institute Research Challenge 2025, securing both the Champion and Runner-Up positions at the local finals held on the 27th of February 2025 at Cinnamon Lakeside, Colombo. This year, the Department of Finance showcased exceptional talent as both of its teams excelled in the competition, demonstrating outstanding skills in equity research, financial analysis, and presentation. The competition, which is a prestigious global event, equips students with invaluable experience and expertise in these areas. Participating teams conducted an in-depth analysis of WindForce PLC and presented their investment recommendations.
Team A, representing the Department of Finance, University of Kelaniya, emerged as the Champion, while Team B secured the Runner-Up position and also won the Best Written Report award. With these victories, the Department of Finance, University of Kelaniya, swept all major titles in the competition. Both teams will now compete in the Sub-Regional Challenge, further solidifying the university’s reputation on the international stage.
The event was graced by Senior Prof. Wasantha Kumara, Vice Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka, as the Chief Guest, and Mr. Dilshan Wirasekera, Chairman of the Colombo Stock Exchange, as the Guest of Honor.
The Champion team comprised Salaama Sanoon (Team Leader), Jithmi Gamage, Kings Karon, Liyoni Hapuarachchi, and Nifal Munhim, who were mentored by Usama Jiffry, CFA, with guidance from Faculty Advisor Sandali Sudasinghe. The Runner-Up team included Ravindu Abeykoon (Team Leader), Nethuni Perera, Yasas Mallawarachchi, Nethmi Athukorala, and Sachintha Rajapaksha. They were mentored by Chathun Heiyanthuduwa, CFA, as the Industry Mentor, with Nethmi Herath, CFA, serving as the Faculty Advisor.
