Centre for Sustainability Solutions (CSS) of the University of Kelaniya (UoK) launched the Volume 1 of “GreenInsights”, an eMagazine on 14th of February 2022 with the objective of promoting and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and to introduce a PPE waste management system for the university.

“GreenInsights” eMagazine portrays a collection of articles written by authors from all over the country on different aspects of sustainability: food security, solid and hazardous waste management, green building equity, equality justice and laws related to sustainability. Further, a PPE waste management system was introduced to ensure the responsible disposal of PPE wastes, specially face masks.

UoK has taken the lead in adapting an environmental policy, banning lunch sheets, introducing a reusable bag, educating children of the university community on sustainable production and consumption, and educating undergraduates on sustainability. With this system for proper disposal of face masks generated in the university, the burden on national waste management is lessened.

As the first Green University in the county, UoK sets an example for other state and private institutes for proper disposal of face masks. The keynote speech on “Understanding SDGs for localization and mainstreaming” was made by Dr. Thusitha Sugathapala, Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering and the former Director General, Sustainable Development Authority. Senior prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of University of Kelaniya graced the event as the chief guest. Dr. Thusitha Sugathapala and the Deans of the faculties were among the other distinguished guests.
