A groundbreaking clinical trial conducted by researchers from RemediumOne and the Clinical Trials Unit of the University of Kelaniya has demonstrated that CeyCinnXTM, a standardized extract of Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), significantly lowers blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study, conducted in collaboration with Dr. Dimuthu Muthukuda, Consultant Endocrinologist at Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, is the largest clinical trial to date on the potential benefits of Ceylon Cinnamon extracts for diabetes management. The findings have been published in the esteemed journal PLoS ONE.
The study revealed that participants who consumed the extract daily for 12 weeks experienced a reduction in fasting blood sugar levels compared to those who did not receive the supplement. While the extract also showed potential to lower LDL cholesterol, this effect was not statistically significant within the 12-week period. Importantly, the study confirmed that the extract was well tolerated, with no reported adverse effects, highlighting its potential as a natural intervention for diabetes management.
The University of Kelaniya played a key role in this research, with its Clinical Trials Unit providing project management and trial coordination through RemediumOne. University researchers were responsible for generating the randomization sequence, ensuring balanced and unbiased participant allocation, while the biostatistics team handled data analysis. Researchers also contributed to manuscript writing, ensuring accuracy and scientific rigor in reporting the findings.
With the global prevalence of diabetes on the rise, natural remedies such as Ceylon Cinnamon extracts could provide a safe and effective means of blood sugar control. Researchers emphasize the need for further studies to explore the long-term benefits and optimal dosing of such extracts. The study also strengthens Sri Lanka’s position as a global leader in high-quality Ceylon Cinnamon production. By scientifically validating its medicinal properties, the findings enhance the commercial value of Ceylon Cinnamon, opening new opportunities in the international health and wellness markets. Increased demand for standardized cinnamon extracts could boost the agricultural sector and drive sustainable economic growth, further establishing Sri Lanka as a key player in the natural health product industry.
