The University of Kelaniya celebrates 10 years of Erasmus partnership during “ERASMUS DAYS 2023”

The International Erasmus Days are celebrated from the 9th to 14th October worldwide. Erasmus is the EU-funded mobility grant scheme for students and staff across the globe.

The University of Kelaniya celebrates 10 years of association with Erasmus programs this year. Erasmus Days have been organized every year since 2020 by the Centre for International Affairs virtually. This year Erasmus Days were celebrated in hybrid mode on the 11th of October 2023, with the international Erasmus alumni of the university and university partners joining online and the local grantees joining onsite.

The event was held under the auspices of Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya in the Senate Room. Among the distinguished guests present were Professor D. M. Semasinghe, Former Vice Chancellor of the University, Senior Professor Lakshman Senevirathne, Former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University, Deans of the Faculties, Heads of the Departments, academic staff, administrative staff, Erasmus alumni and students as well as Prof Jiajuan Xiong, Visiting Scholar from the South-western University for Finance and Economics, China. Several international partners and Erasmus alumni joined the event online including participants from Croatia, Estonia, France, Germany, Portugal, and South Africa.

Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya delivered the welcome address while Professor D. M. Semasinghe, the Former Vice Chancellor summarized the Erasmus activities that took place during his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, the Registrar reiterated the significance of internationalization and exposure for academic and administrative staff as well as the students.

During this event, the Erasmus grantees of international partner universities Prof. Maris Saagpakk of Tallinn University, Estonia, and Prof. Barbara Pisker of University of Osijek, Croatia shared their Erasmus experience and Mr. Maxime Blondel of the University of Rouen, France presented information about the collaboration with the University of Kelaniya since 2013 under different Erasmus programmes. Staff and student mobility grantees of 2023 as well as the Student Volunteers shared their Erasmus experiences with the audience.

The proceedings of the event were conducted by Senior Professor Neelakshi C. Premawardhena, the Director of the Centre for International Affairs.
