University of Kelaniya Marks World Thalassemia Day with Heartfelt Celebration

World Thalassemia Day, observed on May 8th each year, is dedicated to honoring individuals living with thalassemia and remembering those who have lost their lives to the disease. In line with this, the Staff Thalassemia Care Center of the University of Kelaniya organized a commemorative event on May 25, 2025.
The celebration took place at the Ragama Adolescent & Adult Thalassemia Care Center (University Medical Unit), located at the North Colombo Teaching Hospital, Sirima Bandaranayake Mawatha, Mahara, Kadawatha.
The main objective of the event was to bring joy, encouragement, and hope to thalassemia patients and their families, while also paying tribute to those who are no longer with us.
The occasion was graced by Dr. Champika Wickramasinghe, Deputy Director General of the Noncommunicable Diseases Division at the Ministry of Health, who attended as the Chief Guest. Other distinguished invitees included Dr. Sampath Ranaweera, Director of the North Colombo Teaching Hospital, Ragama. Adding a special touch to the event, several well-known artists, including, Dr. Harith Wijeratne, Mr. Suneera Sumanga, Mr. Saranga Disasekara, Ms. Dinakshi Priyasad, and Miss Falan Andrea also attended.
