Fostering Diversity, Empathy, and Social Reconciliation among University Community - One Day Workshop for University Undergraduates

A full-day interactive workshop on ‘Social Reconciliation, Sustainability, and Well-Being,’ organized by the Centre for Social Reconciliation, University of Kelaniya, was held on 20th February 2026 at the A7 406, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya.
Dr Kumudu Sumedha, Director of the Centre for Social Reconciliation; Prof. Prabha Manuratne, Director, Centre for Gender Equity and Equality, University Grants Commission; Dr Nadeeka Premarathne and Senior Lecturer Oshadhi Herath, Faculty Coordinators of the Centre for Social Reconciliation; and Sameera Wijayagunaratne, Instructor in Physical Education, Department of Physical Education, served as resource persons. The workshop brought together 45 students from various faculties, including previously trained Reconciliation Ambassadors, creating a dynamic platform for shared learning and engagement. The session included a range of interactive activities designed to foster creativity, teamwork, and collaboration.
The workshop focused on key thematic areas such as yoga and mind-body awareness, non-violent communication, learning to live with diversity, and social identities. Through experiential and participatory learning approaches, students engaged in reflective discussions and group-based activities aimed at strengthening empathy, inclusion, and respectful dialogue. The programme emphasized the development of practical healing tools and innovative strategies for social reconciliation within the university context. The initiative was funded by the ACU Higher Education and SDGs Challenge Grant.
