Russian Studies Unit Hosts a Workshop on Literary Translation

A workshop on literary translation, organized by the Russian Studies Unit, Department of Modern Languages, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on February 19, 2026, at the Faculty of Humanities.
The event was organized with the aim of enhancing knowledge and interest in translating Russian literature among students of the BA Honours Degree in Russian.
The lectures were delivered by Emeritus Professor Hemantha Sirisena from the Department of Modern Languages, who spoke on translation as a method of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language, and Dr Premarathne Dissanayake from the Department of Linguistics, who discussed the role of the language translator and methods of translation.
Renowned translators Mr Chulananda Samaranayake, Mr Mahinda Senarath Gamage, Dr Ranjana Senasinghe, Ms Malrenu Kasthurirathne, and Mr Felix Fernando shared their valuable experiences in translating Russian literature, offering practical insights into the profession. The workshop provided an excellent platform for students to strengthen their translation skills and inspired them to pursue future careers in translating Russian literature.
The event was attended by the academic staff members and the students of the Department of Modern Languages.
