The Opening Ceremony of the Laboratory Hazardous Waste Management and Disposal Site at the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya was held on the 15th of September 2022
, at the science faculty board room. The event was organized by the University Health and Safety Services (UHSS) Steering Committee.
An MoU was signed between the University of Kelaniya and INSEE ECO CYCLE LANKA (Private) Limited, to process and eliminate hazardous waste of the science, medical and technological laboratories of the University of Kelaniya. INSEE ECOCYCLE LANKA is one of the leading professional waste management service providers in Sri Lanka.
Distinguished guests present on this occasion were the chief guest, Carder Chair & Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. Jeewantha Premaratne, Chairman of the UHSS Steering Committee, Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilake, Registrar, Senior Prof. S. R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean – Faculty of Science, Prof. N. A. K. P. J. Senevitarne, Dean – Faculty of Graduate Studies, Dr. Chamil Pushpakumara, Dean – Faculty of Computing and Technology, Heads of Departments, other academic and laboratory staff members, representing the University of Kelaniya. Mr. Sanjeewa Chulakumara, the Director – INSEE ECOCYCLE LANKA and other members of the executive staff graced the event with their presence.
Parallel to this opening ceremony a workshop was organized and conducted by Prof. Jeewantha Prematarne – Chairman, UHSS Steering Committee and Dr. Pavithra Godamunne – Director, Staff Development Centre of the University. The objective of this workshop was to raise awareness among laboratory staff members, technical staff members and academic support staff members of the University, on proper waste management practices, adoption of green concept, sustainable solutions in waste management, safe handling and disposal of laboratory chemicals and hazardous waste.
