Faculty of Science Successfully Conducts AI Literacy for All – AI Foundation Certificate Programme

The Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, successfully conducted the AI Literacy for All – AI Foundation Certificate Programme on 20 June 2026 at Lecture Hall B1 212. The programme was organized in collaboration with the Lanka Education and Research Network (LEARN) and supported by the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) as part of a national initiative aimed at enhancing AI literacy among university students.
A total of 360 undergraduate students representing all academic programmes and levels of the Faculty of Science successfully completed the AI Foundation Certificate Programme and were awarded certificates upon fulfilling all programme requirements.
The programme was designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of artificial intelligence, its applications, and the responsible use of AI technologies in academic and professional settings. Through a series of interactive learning sessions, participants gained valuable insights into key AI concepts, emerging technologies, and practical AI tools that are transforming education, research, and industry.
The programme featured a keynote address by Professor Roshan G. Ragel, Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Peradeniya, who shared his expertise on the growing impact of artificial intelligence and emphasized the importance of AI literacy for future graduates. Additional sessions were conducted by Dr Pramila Gamage, Programme Coordinator, providing participants with practical exposure to AI technologies and their real-world applications.
The event concluded with a certificate-awarding ceremony recognizing the successful completion of the programme by all participants.
The programme was coordinated by Dr L. P. Nadeeka D. Premarathna of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, whose dedication and efforts ensured the smooth organization and successful implementation of the programme.
By successfully completing the AI Foundation Certificate Programme, students strengthened their understanding of artificial intelligence and developed essential skills to engage with AI technologies effectively and responsibly in their academic pursuits and future careers. The Faculty of Science looks forward to continuing similar initiatives that promote digital literacy, innovation, and lifelong learning among its students.
