Senior Lecturer Dr. U.P. Liyanage was appointed as the new Head of the Department of Statistics & Computer Science, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya. The appointment letter was handed over to the Head by the Vice- Chancellor, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe on the 04^th of November 2019 at the Vice- Chancellor’s Office.

Present at the occasion were Mr. W.M. Karunarathne, Registrar and Ms. Dhammika Ambegoda, Assistant Registrar- Academic Establishment Division.

Dr. U.P. Liyanage completed his bachelor’s degree (BSc Honors Degree in Business, Finance and Computational Mathematics) from the University of Colombo. He obtained MSc in Industrial Mathematics from University Kaiserslautern, Germany, and upon the successful completion of MSc, he was awarded the DAAD Fulbright scholarship for PhD studies at the University of Kaiserslautern, in the field of Industrial Mathematics and Simulation Engineering.

Dr. Liyanage is specialized in Mathematical Modelling in both deterministic and probabilistic nature. In particular, his research is focused on interdisciplinary areas including, mathematical modelling in finance, stochastic modelling, dengue dynamics, process optimization and system architecture analysis. Further, he is a life member of Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science.

Prior to his academic career, he worked in industry and equipped with more than six years of professional experiences in the field of solution engineering and software consultancy, in prominent institutes such as German Research Center for  Artificial Intelligence GmbH, Germany, and Insiders Technology GmbH, Germany.
