The University of Kelaniya hosts a delegation from the Japanese Goodwill Ship PEACEBOAT

The cultural exchange programme with the Japanese Goodwill Ship PEACEBOAT unfolded successfully on the 20th of November 2023 in Colombo. The day-long event aimed at fostering cultural exchange and learning between students from the University of Kelaniya and the Japanese guests learning English on board.

The programme commenced with the welcome address by Senior Professor Neelakshi C. Premawardhena, Director, Centre for International Affairs who has hosted this event since 2001. The two Coordinators from the ship and a Japanese guest set a positive tone for the day with their introductions followed by an insight into Sri Lankan culture through music and dance items presented by the undergraduates. Participants enjoyed a captivating Sinhala song performance, showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich musical heritage and a mesmerizing display of traditional dance, highlighting the diversity and vibrancy of Sri Lanka’s cultural tapestry. Language learning activities deepened the cultural exchange, allowing participants to engage in speaking and writing in Sinhala. The participants embraced the cultural experience by donning traditional attire, fostering a deeper connection with Sri Lankan traditions.

The afternoon session immersed participants in the beauty of Japanese traditional song and dance followed by an interactive session where participants experienced the art of dressing in traditional Japanese attire. Engaging activities including origami and traditional games allowed participants to explore various facets of Japanese culture. Students from the Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, Science and Commerce and Management Studies as well as staff members representing different Faculties joined this programme. The day concluded with a visit to the ship at Colombo Port symbolizing the end of a successful and enriching event.

The Cultural exchange with the delegates from the ship proved to be a resounding success, embodying the spirit of cultural exchange, and fostering lasting connections between Sri Lankan and Japanese participants. The University of Kelaniya thus continues to play a vital role in creating platforms for global understanding and collaboration.
