Empowering Non-Academic Staff in Social Sciences and Technology Faculties: Staff Development Programme for Professional and Personal Growth

The first-ever dedicated Staff Development Program aimed specifically at the professional growth and skill enhancement of non-academic staff was held on June 3rd, 2025, at the Faculty of Computing and Technology premises, University of Kelaniya.

This event, was coordinated by Dr. Thumira Gunasena, Staff Development Coordinator from the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Dr. Amila Jeewandara, Coordinator from the Faculty of Computing and Technology. The program was conducted in close collaboration with the Staff Development Center (SDC) under the guidance of its Director, Professor Ravi Dissanayake, whose invaluable guidance, financial support, and provision of essential human resources had made this initiative possible. 

The presence of Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya; Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; and Professor Dhammika Weerasinghe, Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Technology as honored guests underscored the university’s strong commitment to investing in the growth of all members of its community.

Recognizing the critical role non-academic staff play in the smooth functioning and success of the university, this program was designed to equip them with essential skills that directly contribute to institutional excellence. The sessions, led by guest lecturer Professor Ravi Dissanayake, covered vital topics such as “Organizational Accountability”, “Team Communication and Goal-Oriented Behavior”, and “Professional Development and Leadership Skills.”

Another insightful session was conducted by Dr. Amila Jeewandara, focusing on the critical Role of Employers in Sustainability and Institutional Development, where key strategies, challenges, and best practices were thoroughly discussed to promote long-term organizational growth and environmental responsibility.

This inaugural program marks a significant milestone in recognizing non-academic staff as key contributors to the university’s mission. By fostering professional development and leadership skills among this vital group, the university aims to enhance operational effectiveness, boost morale, and create a sustainable, collaborative work environment that supports both personal and institutional advancement.

Moving forward, such initiatives will continue to play a crucial role in empowering non-academic staff, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the evolving challenges within the higher education landscape.
