University of Kelaniya Joins Hands in Coastal Cleanup Drive at Crow Island Beach

The GreenSpire Club, affiliated with the Centre for Sustainability Solutions (CSS) at the University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the Center for Beach Cleanups, Sri Lanka, successfully organized a major volunteer event on July 26, 2025, at Crow Island Beach.

Guided by Mr. Lahiru Wijeyrathne, founder of the Center for Beach Cleanups, the initiative brought together over 400 participants including students and academic staff from the University of Kelaniya, members of partnering organizations, and representatives from various NGOs. This collective effort marked the largest beach cleanup held in Sri Lanka in 2025. Prominent university figures such as Dr. Wasanthi Subasinghe, Director of the CSS; Senior Lecturer Dr. Lathika Athauda, Head, Department of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine; Mr. Indunil Ranwella, Lecturer and Senior Advisor to GreenSpire; and Mr. Buddhika Wickramasingha, Project Assistant, CSS were present at the event. Over 200 student volunteers from the GreenSpire Club took part, reflecting the strong environmental commitment of the University of Kelaniya.

The cleanup effort resulted in the removal of approximately 200 kilograms of waste including plastics, glass, rubber, organic matter, and other debris, all of which was either responsibly disposed of or directed to recycling centers. Beyond environmental restoration, the event significantly raised public awareness about the impacts of coastal pollution and the importance of sustainable habits. It firmly positioned the University of Kelaniya as a leader in environmental stewardship and community-driven sustainability initiatives.
