Harmony Week 2025 – Film Screening and Discussion: OOzi: A Dark Age

The Centre for Social Reconciliation, in collaboration with the Department of Drama, Cinema, and Television, hosted a special screening and discussion of OOzi: A Dark Age, the Sarasaviya Award-winning film directed by Ranjith Joseph. The event took place on the fourth day of Harmony Week 2025, 11th September 2025 at the K14 Auditorium of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya.
Following the screening, a lively discussion was held featuring key speaker Mr. Vidarshana Kannangara, a renowned political activist and film critic. The session also included participation from the film’s line director and actor Mr. Akash Thiyagalingam, who shared unique insights into the making of the film and its powerful themes. Dr. Kumudu Sumedha, Director of the Centre for Social Reconciliation; Dr. K. R. N. Harshani, Director of the Kalana Mithuru Sewana; several other members of the academic staff, non-academic staff, and students also participated in the event.
OOzi: A Dark Age was widely praised for its artistic portrayal of complex social issues, especially its thoughtful engagement with the post-war struggles of the Tamil community in Sri Lanka and the ongoing quest for justice and truth, making it a meaningful part of Harmony Week’s emphasis on cultural understanding and social reconciliation.
The event brought together students, staff, and members of the public, inspiring thoughtful dialogue and highlighting cinema’s role as a medium for social reflection.
