The Certificate Awarding Ceremony of the Sustainability Leadership Training Programme (SLTP) – 2025 Intake was held on 24th October 2025 at the Senate Room of the University of Kelaniya. The event was organised by the Centre for Sustainability Solutions (CSS) of the University of Kelaniya.
The SLTP is an annual short course offered by the CSS to foster a strong sense of volunteerism, environmental stewardship, and leadership among participants while equipping them with comprehensive knowledge of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
For the 2025 intake, marking the eighth cycle of the programme, the SLTP expanded its reach by opening enrolment not only to undergraduate students at the University of Kelaniya but also to external participants from outside the university community. A total of 68 participants enrolled in this cycle, representing diverse academic and professional backgrounds.
During the ceremony, certificates were presented to the awardees in recognition of their dedication and active engagement in promoting sustainability leadership.
Professor Mangala Yatawara, Director of the CSS and Coordinator of the SLTP, welcomed the gathering and emphasized the importance of sustainability education in developing future leaders capable of addressing global environmental challenges.
Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, who graced the event as the Chief Guest, congratulated the students on their accomplishments and encouraged them to continue contributing to climate action and SDG awareness.
Adding inspiration to the event, the CSS proudly celebrated the selection of Ms. Tharushi Yapa, a participant of the SLTP, for the prestigious JENESYS programme—an international youth exchange initiative recognising emerging leaders in sustainability. Her accomplishment stands as a testament to the programme’s mission to nurture globally minded, sustainability-driven youth.
The event was graced by the presence of Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar of the University of Kelaniya; Professor K. G. Madurika Nanayakkara, Deputy Director of the CSS; Dr. Wasanthi Subasinghe, Dr. Amila Jeewandara, Dr. D. M. P. V. Dissanayaka, Mr. Hashan Wijesinghe, and Mr. Indunil Ranwella, faculty representatives of the CSS; and Mr. Buddhika Wickramasingha, Project Assistant of the CSS.
