Capacity-Building Workshop for Journalists on ‘Ethical Standards and Media Responsibility in Disaster Reporting’

The Communication and Media Unit of the University of Kelaniya successfully organized a capacity-building workshop for journalists on ‘Ethical Standards and Media Responsibility in Disaster Reporting,’ under the theme ‘A Responsible and Ethical Media Culture – A Clean Sri Lanka.’ Held on December 18, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Staff Development Centre, University of Kelaniya,

the workshop was conducted under the direction of Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, and supervision of Senior Lecturer Saman Rajapaksha, Director of the Communication and Media Unit.

Key resource persons included Professor Nishan Sakalasooriya, Head of the Department of Geography, who conducted a session on ‘Disaster Management and Media Responsibility’; Dr Manoj Jinadasa, Head and Senior Lecturer of the Department of Mass Communication, who spoke on ‘Disaster Communication, Digital Media, and Disinformation’; Senior Lecturer Amali Uthpala Nandasiri of the Department of Mass Communication, who presented on ‘Disaster Reporting and Media Ethics’; and Senior Lecturer Tharindu Dhananjaya Weerasinghe of the Department of Human Resource Management,  who delivered an insightful session on ‘Media Responsibility in Community Empowerment in the Post-Disaster Period’.

The event also featured a panel discussion, and certificates of participation were awarded to the participants at the conclusion of the workshop.

The event also saw the participation of around 40 journalists from both electronic and print media sectors; staff members of the Communication and Media Unit; and students from the Department of Mass Communication.
