The establishment of a temporary Emergency Care Unit under the Medical Centre of the University of Kelaniya was held on the 04^th of December 2018. This temporary Emergency Care Unit was declared open for the benefit of the staff members and undergraduates until the establishment of a permanent Emergency Care Unit. This was planned with the objective of enhancing the quality of the services provided by the Medical Centre.

The donation of two modern beds was also took place in relation to this event and the donation was made by Dr. Wijayananda Wickrama who was an undergraduate of the first batch (1959- 1963 batch) of the University of Kelaniya.

The event was held under the patronage of the Vice- Chancellor, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe. Present at the occasion were Senior Lecturer Ven. Dr. Kapugollewe Anandakiththi Thero, Director- Student Affairs, Senior Prof. S.R.D. Kalingamudali, Chairman- Sports Advisory Board, Senior Lecturer Noel Wijerathne, Senior Student Counsellor- Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Hemantha Sirisena, academic staff members, Mr. W.M. Karunarathne, Registrar, Dr. Chinthaka Ranasinghe, Chief Medical Officer- Medical Centre of the University, staff members of the Medical Centre and active members of the Alumni Association.
