University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Ltd

The Internship and Career Development Centre of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited on the 31st of March 2026 at the Senate Room of the University.

This collaboration marks a significant step in strengthening industry partnerships while introducing innovative opportunities for students to engage in flexible, income-generating activities alongside their academic pursuits. Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited (SLIC) is widely recognized as the leading general insurance provider in the country, known for its strong reputation in trust, customer care, and innovation, and for offering a diverse range of insurance solutions to empower Sri Lankans.

The primary objective of this MoU is to introduce university students to a virtual platform through which they can earn a flexible income by promoting and selling insurance products via social media. This initiative is designed not only to provide financial benefits to students but also to equip them with practical skills in sales, digital engagement, and customer relationship management. Through structured guidance and professional training provided by SLIC, students will gain valuable industry exposure while enhancing their employability and entrepreneurial capabilities.

The signing ceremony was attended by several distinguished representatives from the University of Kelaniya, including Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University; Professor Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies; Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar of the University; and Dr. Chathuni Jayasinghe, Director of the Internship and Career Development Centre. Heads of Departments of the Faculty, internship coordinators from each department, and members of the academic staff were also present, reflecting the University’s strong commitment to fostering industry-linked learning opportunities.

Representing Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited were Dr Sameera Dharmasena, Chief Executive Officer; Mr Sanjaya Attanayaka, Chief Business Officer; Mr Asiri Wikramarachchi, Chief Officer; and Mr Vibushan Bulathsinhala, Senior Manager – Sales Training and Development, along with several other representatives of the organization. Their participation highlighted the company’s dedication to engaging with the higher education sector and contributing to the development of future professionals.

During the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, the Dean, and Dr. Chathuni Jayasinghe delivered speeches on behalf of the University, emphasizing the growing importance of part-time employment opportunities for undergraduates in today’s dynamic economic environment. They highlighted how such initiatives not only support students financially but also enable them to develop essential workplace competencies and gain early exposure to industry practices. Speaking on behalf of SLIC, Dr Sameera Dharmasena underscored the mutual benefits of such collaborations, noting that partnerships between universities and industry create a platform for knowledge exchange, talent development, and innovation.

The MoU represents a forward-looking partnership that aligns academic learning with real-world applications, particularly in the context of digital platforms and flexible employment models.
