The Faculty of Graduate Studies, in collaboration with the CKDu Information and Research Centre, University of Kelaniya, successfully conducted the IPRC 2025 Pre-Conference Training Workshop on ‘ICP-MS, HPLC & GC Advanced Instruments’ Sample Preparation, Analysis & Troubleshooting with Theoretical Knowledge on 1st November 2025 at the CKDu Information and Research Centre, Faculty of Science.
Although the workshop was capped at 100 participants, it drew an impressive 212 applications, reflecting the strong interest in the program. The event was designed to equip participants with comprehensive knowledge and hands-on skills in advanced analytical instrumentation, with a focus on sample preparation, analytical techniques, and troubleshooting practices.
This exclusive workshop, held as part of the International Postgraduate Research Conference (IPRC) 2025, was conducted under the guidance of Snr. Prof. P. A. Paranagama, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies; Prof. W. A. P. J. Premaratne, Head of the Department of Chemistry; Snr. Prof. J.A. Liyanage, coordinator of the workshop; and Mr K. B. S. L. Wijeratne, Deputy Registrar of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The lecture sessions were conducted by Snr. Prof. Priyani A. Paranagama, Prof. Jeewantha Premaratne and Dr Thelma Abeysinghe from the Open University of Sri Lanka, with the support of a skilled academic and technical team, facilitated hands-on demonstrations and guided participants throughout the practical sessions. Their combined expertise provided attendees with valuable, in-depth exposure to Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP–MS), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and Gas Chromatography (GC).
The Workshop brought together a diverse group of participants representing universities, government research organizations, regulatory bodies, private laboratories, and industrial sectors across the country. The workshop provided a dynamic platform for academics, postgraduate researchers, R&D officers, and technical professionals to engage in meaningful dialogue and share their expertise in analytical and instrumental sciences.
Throughout the one-day intensive program, participants gained hands-on experience operating sophisticated analytical instruments while deepening their theoretical understanding. The event provided a platform for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and capacity building in analytical science. At the end of the workshop, all participants were awarded a valuable certificate of participation, recognizing their commitment to professional development. Given the overwhelming success and engagement, the faculty announced that this workshop series will continue in the future, supporting the advancement of research and analytical expertise in Sri Lanka.
