German Day celebrations at the University of Kelaniya

The German Section of the Department of Modern Languages and the Centre for International Affairs celebrated ‘German Day’ at the University of Kelaniya on the 11th of November at the Dharmaloka Hall of the University of Kelaniya.

Students from all three batches of BA Honors in German Studies and BA Degree Programme performed items including songs, dances, musical interpretations of German fairy tales, and dramas. 

The winners of the Creative Writing Competition in the German language were awarded certificates at the event while the winners were also awarded Language Scholarships by the Goethe Institute in Sri Lanka. Further, books and teaching materials were donated to the German Section. Further, a session on Effective Public Speaking was conducted for all the students by Mr. Lochana Atapattu, an Intern at the Language Department of the Goethe Institute in Sri Lanka. The event was held under the patronage of the Goethe Institute Sri Lanka.

Present at the occasion were Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, the Registrar of the University of Kelaniya, Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Dilrukshi Rathnayake, Head of the Department of Modern Languages. Mr. Stefan Winkler, the Director of the Goethe Institute Sri Lanka, Mr. Rakitha Karunarathna, the Head of the Language Department of Goethe Institute and German Academic Exchange Service Colombo, and Mr. Nadeesha Palliyaguru, the Information and Office Manager graced the event as the guests of honor. Also, Dr. Narada Fernando, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, academic staff, staff of the library, other administrative staff, and students of the Department of Modern Languages participated in this event.
