‘Prabhāṣaṇaya’ Explores Global Influence on Sinhala Literature and Cultural Studies

‘Prabhāṣaṇaya’, the research symposium, organized by the Department of Sinhala, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on the 30th of January 2025, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Humanities. The symposium centered on the theme “The Influence of World Literature on Sinhala Language Literature and Cultural Studies.”
The primary objective of the symposium was to inspire research-oriented undergraduates to critically appreciate creative literature, in an era where research on literary appreciation is on the decline.
Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, graced the inauguration ceremony as the Chief Guest. Other distinguished attendees included Senior Professor Sudath R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies; Dr. Sudath Senerath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Professor H. A. A. Swarna Ihalagama, Head of the Department of Sinhala; and Chair and Senior Professor M. A. Nimal Karunaratne from the Department of Sinhala.
The keynote address was delivered by veteran literary award-winning writer Mr. Eric Ilayapparachchi, under the title “The Social and Intimate Role of the Literarian, Missing in Contemporary Sinhala Literary Studies”.
The event was attended by the academic and non-academic staff of the Department of Sinhala, along with the symposium presenters.
Following the inauguration ceremony, presentation sessions commenced, supervised by subject matter experts in various fields.
