Master of Fine Arts Degree Show 2025 Held Successfully

The inauguration ceremony of the Master of Fine Arts Degree Show 2025, organized by the Master of Fine Arts Degree Programme, Department of Fine Arts, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on 27th June 2025, at the JDA Perera Gallery, University of Visual and Performing Arts, Horton Place, Colombo 07.
The Degree Show was a public exhibition showcasing the work of 31 postgraduate students enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts Degree Programme at the University of Kelaniya. The exhibition was open to the public from 27th to 30th June 2025.
The event was held with the aims of showcasing artistic excellence; encouraging critical engagement and critical reflection through the integration of art theory, philosophy, criticism, and conceptual thinking; promoting interdisciplinary learning and highlighting the unique hybrid nature of the MFA programme, which blends academic research with studio-based practice; developing professional practice; enhancing public appreciation of contemporary art; strengthening academic and artistic discourse; and celebrating the university’s contribution to the arts.
The event was graced by the presence of Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, while other distinguished invitees included Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean Faculty of Humanities; Chair Senior Professor Patrick Rathnayaka, Department of Drama, Cinema and Television; Professor Chandraguptha Thenuwara, University of the Visual and Performing Arts; Dr. Sathsara Ilangasinghe, Dean Faculty of Visual Arts, University of Visual and Performing Arts; Embassy representatives; Art Collectors; Art gallery and Studio representatives; Artists; and the other distinguished guests.
This hybrid programme was an innovative blend of art history, art theory, art philosophy, art criticism, critical thinking, academic writing on art, and studio-based conceptual art practices. The exhibition reflected the depth and diversity of each student’s artistic journey, integrating both theoretical frameworks and practical exploration.
