A special session on 5S, the Japanese workplace method known for improving organization and efficiency, organized by the Japanese Unit of the Department of Modern Languages, University of Kelaniya, was held on August 20, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Humanities. Attended by the undergraduate students majoring in Japanese Language at the University of Kelaniya, the session was conducted by Ms. Toshiko Kawanami, an experienced HR consultant from Japan.
Ms. Kawanami shared her first-hand experience with 5S and explained how it shapes productivity and discipline in Japanese work culture. She described how the five principles - Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain - go beyond simple tidying and help create workplaces where people can work smarter and take pride in what they do.
Ms. Kawanami is a veteran HR consultant with over 50 years of international experience. Since 2011, she has advised companies on HR strategy and leadership development, drawing on her Master’s in International and Intercultural Management. She has conducted leadership programs in both Japan and Sri Lanka, often sharing insights from renowned Japanese leaders and emerging entrepreneurs. She also serves on the board of the International Cooperation Organization for SMEs in Asia.
Her session gave students a practical glimpse into how Japanese companies maintain discipline and efficiency and how these practices could be valuable in workplaces anywhere in the world.
The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Dilrukshi Rathnayake, the staff, members of the Japanese Club, and all the students who helped make the workshop a success.
