Bon Odori Lights Up University of Kelaniya with Japanese Culture, Dance, and Fireworks

The University of Kelaniya came alive with colorful lanterns, the steady beat of Bon music, and dazzling fireworks on August 19, 2025. Students, staff, and visitors gathered at the Polwatta grounds, drawing a crowd well beyond expectations, to celebrate Bon Odori, Japan’s beloved summer festival. The event, organized by the Japanese Unit of the Department of Modern Languages together with the Japanese Club, aimed to expand cultural awareness among Japanese language students while offering everyone a glimpse into Japanese tradition.

Among the special guests were Ven. Senior Professor Nedalagamuwe Dhammadinna Thero, Head of the Department of Modern Languages; Senior Professor Patrick Rathnayake from the Department of Drama, Cinema and Television; and Senior Lecturer (Ms.) Lanka de Silva, Head of the Department of Fine Arts. [

The evening carried a warm, festive spirit. Students from the Japanese Club hosted food, game, yukata fitting, and accessory stalls, while the photo booth quickly became a favorite spot for friends eager to capture memories of the night. Tempura Shikisen, a well-known restaurant, also joined in, serving dishes that brought the flavors of Japan to the heart of Kelaniya.

Adding to the lively atmosphere, the Taiko drummers from the National Youth Services Council, Maharagama, delivered an energetic performance, filling the grounds with powerful rhythms that perfectly complemented the Bon Odori festivities.

As night fell, fireworks lit up the sky, drawing cheers from the crowd. The highlight of the festival, the traditional Bon Odori dance, brought students together in circles, moving rhythmically under the open sky. Rupavahini was also on hand to film the celebrations for their program ようこそ日本へ (“Welcome to Japan”).

Additionally, the event was attended by Prof. Dilrukshi Rathnayake, along with the academic and non-academic staff and the students of the Japanese Club, whose effort and enthusiasm made the night a memorable celebration of culture and friendship.
