Bridging Cultures Through Ink: A Memorable Calligraphy Workshop at Kelaniya University

The Japanese Unit of the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Kelaniya conducted a special workshop on traditional Japanese calligraphy (書道, shodō) on August 6, 2025, at the Japanese Lab of the University.

The workshop was part of a cultural exchange program aimed at helping students experience and appreciate the beauty of the Japanese language, art, and traditions.

The session was led by 89-year-old Mrs. Miyako, who shared her skills and passion for this ancient art. The calligraphy workshop offered 48 B.A. Honours Japanese Studies students a hands-on opportunity to engage with this centuries-old art form.

Mrs. Miyako began the workshop by demonstrating basic brush techniques, explaining the structure of kanji characters, and sharing the philosophy behind each stroke. Students then had the opportunity to practice calligraphy themselves, using traditional tools such as the fude (brush) and sumi (ink). She also provided individual feedback and words of encouragement to each participant, leaving a lasting impression on their learning journey.

Notably, the workshop was organized under the invaluable guidance of Ven. Senior Professor Nedalagamuwe Dhammadinna Thero, Head of the Department of Modern Languages, and Professor Dilrukshi Rathnayake, Professor in Japanese Language, together with other attending staff members. The support of the final-year students also contributed greatly to the success of the event.

The workshop was a resounding success, serving as a reminder that language learning is not only about grammar and vocabulary, but also about embracing the culture, spirit, and beauty behind the words.
