Bridging Cultures Through Rhythm: Japanese Taiko Concert at University of Kelaniya

A powerful and exciting Japanese Taiko Concert was held on November 7, 2025, at the Dharmaloka Hall, University of Kelaniya. The event was organized by the Japanese Club of the University of Kelaniya with the support of the Department of Modern Languages.
The main performance of the evening was by “Daigen Gumi”, a famous group of professional Taiko drummers from Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 2000, “Daigen Gumi” has performed across Japan and internationally, spreading the spirit and energy of Japanese traditional drumming. The performance was full of rhythm, strength, and passion. The deep, powerful beats of the Taiko drums and the synchronized movements of the performers created a thrilling atmosphere that kept the audience completely engaged. It was a memorable experience that beautifully represented the heart of Japanese culture and discipline.
The event was graced by Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, and Ven. Senior Professor Nedalagamuwe Dhammadinna Thero, Head of the Department of Modern Languages.
Distinguished guests included Mr. Naoki KAMOSHIDA, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan; Mr. Yohei SASAKAWA, Honorary Chairman, The Nippon Foundation; Ms. Miyuki EGUCHI, First Secretary, Embassy of Japan; Ms. Mioko KAWAMOTO, Third Secretary, Embassy of Japan; Mr. Dayasiri Warnakulasooriya, Chairman, Japanese Language Education Association; and Mrs. Yuki MINAMIDANI, Honorary Visiting Lecturer, University of Kelaniya (Japan Foundation). They, together with Professor Dilrukshi Ratnayaka of the Department of Modern Languages, also met with Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, on the same day at the Vice-Chancellor’s office.
A short Sri Lankan traditional drumming performance was added as a local touch, showcasing the cultural friendship between Japan and Sri Lanka.
The Japanese Taiko Concert was not only an evening of music and performance but also a celebration of the strong friendship and cultural exchange between Japan and Sri Lanka. The unforgettable rhythm of Daigen Gumi’s drums will surely echo in the hearts of all who attended.
