Her Excellency Dr Siri Walt, the Swiss Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Visits the Department of Western Classical Culture and Christian Culture

The Department of Western Classical Culture and Christian Culture, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, had the privilege of welcoming Her Excellency Dr Siri Walt, Ambassador of Switzerland to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, on 25 June 2026 for a special academic dialogue with the Students of Classics, held at the Boardroom of the Faculty of Humanities.
Her Excellency was warmly welcomed by the Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya; Senior Professor Patrick Ratnayake; Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Rev. Dr Roshan Fernando, Head of the Department of Western Classical Culture and Christian Culture; and members of the academic staff. The visit provided a unique opportunity for students and academics to engage with a distinguished diplomat whose academic background includes a Doctorate in Classical Studies.
A moderated discussion was conducted by Senior Lecturer Sathsara Perera, together with undergraduate student Mr Nisika Chamodith, on the importance of Classical Studies for the 21st century. During the interactive session, Her Excellency shared insights into her academic journey in Classics, her diplomatic career, the relevance of Classical Studies in the contemporary world, and the value of international academic collaboration. Students actively participated in the discussion by raising questions on a range of topics related to Classics and its modern relevance.
Following the interactive session, Her Excellency visited the Department of Western Classical Culture and Christian culture, where she met with the academic staff for a cordial discussion on potential avenues for academic cooperation and the future development of Classical Studies. The visit concluded with a tour of the Department, reaffirming the University of Kelaniya’s commitment to strengthening international academic partnerships and promoting excellence in Classical Studies.
