Faculty of Medicine Excellence Awards 2022/23

The seventh annual Faculty of Medicine Excellence Awards ceremony was held on the 11th of December 2024 at the Main Auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine. Pioneered by the Faculty of Medicine, this annual ceremony celebrates and rewards highly motivated students who demonstrate exceptional abilities in academics and extracurricular activities.
It also honors the dedication, passion, and innovation of our academic and non-academic staff. This year’s Faculty of Medicine Excellence Awards ceremony celebrated the outstanding achievements of both students and staff for the academic years 2022/2023.
Senior Prof. Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, graced the ceremony as the chief guest, while the distinguished guests included Professor Madawa Chandratilake, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Dr. Sudath Senerath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Prof. C. Pathirawasam, Director of the Center for Quality Assurance; Prof. Madhurika Nanayakkara, Chairman of the Strategic Planning Implementation and Monitoring Committee; Mr. K. K. K. Dharmatilake, Registrar of University of Kelaniya; Mrs. Erandi Wagalath, Senior Assistant Registrar of the Faculty of Medicine; Mrs. Sanjeewani Wijesekara, Deputy Bursar of the Faculty of Medicine as well as other invited guests from the University.
Students who excelled at their relevant examinations from the MBBS, BSc Speech and Hearing Sciences, and the BSc Occupational Therapy programmes were named to the Dean’s List, while students who performed outstandingly in their academics as well as in extracurricular activities were recognized with Faculty Awards. In addition, students who showed excellence in extra-curricular activities during their time at the faculty were awarded with Faculty ExtraCurricular Activities Tributes (FEAT). Teaching Excellence Awards were awarded in recognition of academic staff from the MBBS and BSc Speech and Hearing Sciences programmes, who excelled in teaching in small and large group settings, student mentorship, and student supervision. Extended faculty members who supervise students from the MBBS programme during their third and fourth-year clinical rotations and Speech and Hearing Sciences students during their clinical placements were also recognized for their contributions at the ceremony. Non-academic staff from two different categories were also awarded Faculty Excellence Awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions to faculty activities.

Sarangi, Ms. H. M. T. Sandaminie, Ms. S. S. V. Dissanayake, and Ms. N. W. D. R. Punsara from the BSc Occupational Therapy programme, were named to the Dean’s List. Ms. L. C. D. Peries, Ms. I. U. Hettiarachchi, Ms. A. L. S. N. Gunaratne, Dr. U. K. Abeywickrama, and Dr. D. S. J. J. Subasinghe were recognized with Faculty Awards. Ms. L. C. D. Peries, Mr. A. D. T. S. Jayawardena, Mr. A. S. Abeywardena, Mr. W. M. P. H. Walisinghe, Mr. J. D. Karunarathne, Mr. N. M. Rupasinghe, and Ms. A.L.S.N. Gunaratne were awarded with Faculty ExtraCurricular Activities Tributes (FEAT).
Awardees named to the MBBS teachers’ list 2022/2023 received awards for Excellence in Student Teaching, Excellence in Student Mentorship, Excellence in Student Research Supervision, and Teaching Excellence for Extended Faculty of the MBBS programme. Accordingly, awards for Excellence in Student Teaching were awarded to Dr. D. C. Kottahachchi and Prof. N. M. Devanarayana for Phase 1, Prof. I. D. G. Kitulwatte and Prof. A. S. Dassanayake for Phase 2, and Dr. P. M. Y. I. Thilakarathne and Prof. D. S. G. Mettananda for Phase 3. Awards for Excellence in Student Mentorship were awarded to Dr. S. A. S. R. Siriwardana and Dr. P. M. T. B. Wickramasinghe for Phase 1, Prof. W. N. S. Perera and Prof. I. D. G. Kitulwatte for Phase 2, and Prof. B. A. H. R. Premaratne, Prof. A. Hapangama, and Prof. R. Fernando for Phase 3. Dr. D. C. Kottahachchi and Dr. P. K. S. Godamunne received awards for Excellence in Student Research Supervision. Awards for Teaching Excellence for Extended Faculty of the MBBS programme were awarded to Dr. A. A. D. S. Amarasekara for Medicine and related disciplines, Dr. A. Fernando and Dr. D. T. Gunasena for Surgery and related disciplines, Dr. S. Sivasumithran for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. M. Panapitiya for Paediatrics, and Dr. N. Rajakaruna for Other Specialties.
Awardees named to the BSc SHS teachers’ list 2022/2023 received awards for Excellence in Student Teaching, Excellence in Student Mentorship, Excellence in Student Research Supervision, and Excellence in Student Clinical Supervision (BSc SHS programme). Accordingly, the awards for Excellence in Student Teaching were awarded to Ms. G. Kodithuwakku for first-year core modules, Dr. I. Dharmarathne for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-year core modules, Prof. S. Hettiarachchi for the 2nd and 3rd-year BSc SHS Programme (Speech and Language Therapy), and Ms. D. Dantanarayana for the 2nd and 3rd-year BSc SHS Programme (Audiology). Awards for Excellence in Student Mentorship were awarded to Dr. L. B. T. C. Lokubalasuriya (for students specializing in Speech and Language Therapy) and Ms. D. De Silva (for students specializing in Audiology). Ms. M. D. K. De Silva was awarded for Excellence in Student Research Supervision. Awards for Excellence in Student Clinical Supervision (BSc SHS programme) were awarded to Dr. N. Muttiah for Excellence in Student Clinical Supervision of students specializing in Speech and Language Therapy (Internal), Ms. D. Dantanarayana for Excellence in Student Clinical Supervision of students specializing in Audiology (Internal), Mr. S. Premarathna for Excellence in Student Clinical Supervision of students specializing in Speech and Language Therapy (External), and Ms. F.A. Nazeer for Excellence in Student Clinical Supervision of students specializing in Audiology (External).
Ms. M. B. Solangaarachchige from the Category 1-Technical Officer/Audio Visual Technical Officer and Ms. L. M. T. D. Thilakasiri from the Category 4 – Works Aid/Library Assistant/Driver/ Driving Assistant/Post-mortem Labourer/Health Services Labourer were awarded Faculty Excellence Awards for Non-Academic Staff.
