International Allied Health Professionals Tour Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya

A distinguished delegation of international allied health professionals, led by renowned occupational therapist and the former president of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, Professor Kit Sinclair, visited the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, on the 25th of February 2025, as part of their educational tour in Sri Lanka. The event, hosted by the Department of Disability Studies, aimed to foster collaboration between Sri Lankan occupational therapy students and the global professional community.

The event, held at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine, aimed to foster global connections by strengthening relationships between Sri Lankan occupational therapy students and the international professional community. It also provided an opportunity for the visitors to experience Sri Lanka’s rich cultural traditions while encouraging students to develop leadership and event management skills beyond their clinical training.

The event was graced by Professor Madawa Chandratilake, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, as the Chief Guest. The visiting professionals were given a guided tour of the faculty’s medical library and organic garden, offering them insight into the university’s academic and sustainable initiatives.

A highlight of the evening was a cultural event and a traditional Sri Lankan dinner, organised by the students of the BSc Occupational Therapy program. The event not only welcomed the international team but also provided a platform for students to showcase their organisational skills, creativity, and appreciation for Sri Lankan heritage.

The visit marked a significant step in building cross-border professional networks and enriching the educational experience of future occupational therapists in Sri Lanka. The Faculty of Medicine, through such initiatives, continues to position itself as a hub for global academic and cultural exchange in the field of rehabilitation sciences.

Additionally, the event witnessed the presence of Dr. Dinushee Atapattu Bakmeewewa, Head of the Department of Disability Studies; members of the faculty unions; academic and non-academic staff and students of the Department of Disability Studies; and representatives from all the batches of the BSc Degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences (specializing in Speech & Language Therapy or in Audiology).
