Pioneering Moment for Sri Lanka’s Government Healthcare with First IVF Baby Delivery at Colombo North Teaching Hospital, Ragama

The first-ever successful In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) baby delivery in the government healthcare sector of Sri Lanka was achieved on 31st July 2025, at the Colombo North Teaching Hospital, Ragama.
This remarkable milestone follows a successful IVF pregnancy performed last year by the IVF Center of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. It marked the first-ever successful IVF pregnancy within the government healthcare landscape in the country.
The fertilization procedure was carried out by a team of doctors led by Dr. Suranga Hettipathirana, a Specialist in Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Subfertility, and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. The achievement is the result of a year-long research initiative, making it a landmark advancement in public sector fertility care in Sri Lanka.
The mother, who conceived through this IVF procedure, delivered her baby via cesarean section on July 31, 2025, at the Colombo North Teaching Hospital. The surgery was performed by a team of specialists led by Professor Rasika Herath, a Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya.
The 31-year-old mother and her newborn are reported to be in good health following the procedure.
This remarkable event marks a historic milestone in Sri Lanka, as it is the very first time a baby conceived through IVF within the government sector has been born in a government hospital.
