Opening Ceremony of “Ayati”; First National Centre for Children with Disabilities

Opening ceremony of “Ayati”; 01st National Centre for children with disabilities was held on 25th of January, 2020 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. It was opened by HE President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

The newly opened centre, an initiative of public-private collaboration which is located within the university premises in Ragama was set up to address a burning issue prevailing in the country.

The centre will provide opportunities and hope for children with disabilities to achieve their maximum potential and be fully integrated into the society. The Ayati Centre will provide multidisciplinary care for children with various disabilities.

The construction of the centre was carried out by Sri Lanka Army with the financial assistance of Hemas Holdings, MAS Holdings abd Roshan Wijerama Foundation. Hearing equipments were supplied by Rotary. The centre will be managed by a Board of Trustees chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya.

Daily clinics will be conducted by doctors attached to the Faculty of Medicine of University of Kelaniya. Medical assessment, speech and language therapy, audiology and occupational therapy as well as physiotherapy will be available at the centre free of charge.

Semasinghe, Vice-Chancellor- University of Kelaniya, Senior Prof. Prasantha S. Wijesinghe, Dean- Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Chairperson- Ayati Trust, Vice Admiral Piyal de Silva, Commander- Sri Lanka Navy, Roshan Mahanama, member- Ayati Trust and other distinguished guests were present at the occasion.
