Information Session on Higher Education and Grant Opportunities in Europe

An Information Session on Higher Education and Grant Opportunities in Europe was held on July 03, 2025, at the Boardroom of the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, under the patronage of Senior Prof. S. R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science. The session was organized by the Department of Physics and Electronics, and the Research and Services Centre of the Faculty of Science in collaboration with the Centre for International Affairs, University of Kelaniya. 

Inaugurating the session Dean, Faculty of Science, Senior Prof. S. R. D. Kalingamudali welcomed all the guests and participants to the event. Ms. Caroline Lopez, Deputy Head, Political Section, and Ms. Seuwandi Yapa, Project Manager, Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka and the Maldives spoke on EU support for higher education, European Masters, and Erasmus Mundus scholarship schemes respectively. Ms. Anaïs Delbarre, Attaché for Educational, Academic and Scientific Cooperation, Embassy of France to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, explained educational opportunities in France. Ms. Nimaya Manudewa, Regional Officer, DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), presented on higher education opportunities in Germany includinggrants and scholarship that are currently available for Sri Lankan students, academics, and researchers. National support and scholarship through the Education Ministry was explained by Ms. Sasika Liyanage, Director, Overseas Education, Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education. 

Further, Prof. J. M. J. W. Jayasinghe, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, made a presentation on the advantages of choosing European Union for higher education and research. Prof. A. Daranagama, Director, Research and Services Centre, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya elaborated on the support services offered to university academics, researchers and undergraduates.

Mr. Punsisi Liyanage, a graduate of University of Kelaniya, who is currently pursuing his European Masters in Lexicography on an Erasmus Mundus scholarship shared his experience in a recorded message.  

 A panel discussion was held at the end of the session with all the guests and it was moderated by Dr. Chathuranga Kumarage, Senior Lecturer, Department of Physics and Electronics. Dr. Samanthi Jayawardena, Deputy Director, Centre for International Affairs delivered the vote of thanks and presented tokens of appreciation to the guests. Academic staff members, postgraduate students, and final year undergraduates took part in the session.
