The Inauguration of the Foundation Programme for the 5^th Batch of the BSc Honours in Sports Science Degree (Academic Year 2024/2025), offered by the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, was held on 16 February 2026 at the Faculty Boardroom of the Faculty of Science, marking the formal commencement of the academic journey for approximately 50 newly enrolled students.

The ceremony was graced by Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, as the Chief Guest.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr P Buvanendiran, Head of the Sports and Exercise Science Unit, who highlighted the importance of the foundation programme in preparing students for the academic and professional demands of Sports Science.

Addresses were also delivered by Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya; Senior Professor Ruwan Wijesundera, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Science; Senior Professor Sudath Kalingamudali, Chairman of the Sports Advisory Board and Former Dean of the Faculty of Science; and Dr Kasun Fernando, Director of Student Affairs. In their remarks, they encouraged the new students to pursue academic excellence and actively engage in the diverse opportunities available at the University.

The programme also included an address by Mr I M Ranasinghe, Senior Lecturer (on contract), on the importance of the foundation programme. In addition, senior students representing each academic year shared their experiences of university life and highlighted the learning opportunities available within the degree programme.

The ceremony concluded with a video presentation introducing the degree programme and the official commencement of the Foundation Programme, marking the beginning of the students’ academic journey in Sports Science at the University of Kelaniya.
