Prof. G. A. S. M. Ganehiarachchi was appointed as the new Head of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya.

The appointment letter was handed over to the Head by the Vice- Chancellor, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe on the 20^th of August 2019 at the Vice- Chancellor’s Office.

Present at the occasion was Ms. Dhammika Ambegoda, Deputy Registrar- Academic Establishment Division.

Prof. G. A. S. M. Ganehiarachchi obtained his bachelor’s degree (BSc) and M.Phil (Entomology) from the University of Kelaniya and Ph.D. (Entomology) from the North Dakota State University, USA.

Biology and Behaviour of Medically Important Insects and Insect Plant Interactions are some of his research interests while Partial Age Specific Life Table of Sugarcane Planthopper Pyrilla Perpusilla Walker (Homoptera: Lophopidae), Oviposition Behavior of Orange Wheat Blossom Midge on Low – Versus High Ranked Grass Heads, Ovipositing Females of a Short-Lived Gall Midge Take Time to Assess Grass Seed Heads and Impact of Planting Dates on a Seed Maggot, Neotephritis Finalis (Diptera: Tephritidae), and Sunflower Bud Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Damage in Cultivated Sunflower are some of his publications.

Prof. G. A. S. M. Ganehiarachchi also received the NRC Merit Award for Scientific Publications -2011, NRC Merit Award for Scientific Publications -2013, Senate Award, University of Kelaniya -2016 and Presidential Travel Award for the supported participation in the 51^st & 53^rd Annual Meeting of Entomological Society of America in the years 2003 and 2005 respectively.

He is a life member of Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science, life member of Sri Lanka Association for the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and life member of Institute of Biology in Sri Lanka.
