A special discussion on the Bill to Establish the Institute of Chartered Media Professionals was successfully held on 16 July 2026 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Jointly organized by the Department of Mass Communication and the Communication and Media Unit of the University of Kelaniya, the discussion brought together media professionals, journalists, and policymakers to deliberate on the proposed Bill.

The participants expressed diverse perspectives on the Bill, engaging in a constructive discussion on its potential implications for the media profession and the broader communication landscape.

The event was graced by the presence of Professor Chaminda Abeysinghe, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Dr Manoj Jinadasa, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Mass Communication, together with the academic staff of the Department; Senior Lecturer Saman Rajapaksha, Director of the Communication and Media Unit, along with the staff of the Unit; and students of the Department of Mass Communication.
