The University of Kelaniya women’s basketball team delivered an impressive performance to secure the 1st Runner-Up title at the Imperial Blaze 2025 Inter-University Sports Tournament, held on 5th July 2025 at St. Joseph’s College, Colombo.

The tournament featured intense competition among top university teams across Sri Lanka. Imperial College Colombo emerged as champions, with the University of Kelaniya finishing as 1st Runner-Up and the University of Colombo claiming the 2nd Runner-Up position. The men’s team of the UoK qualified for the quarterfinals and lost to the University of Colombo after a close fight.

A highlight of the tournament was the remarkable performance by Shenali Dion Fernando of the University of Kelaniya, who was awarded the Best Offensive Player of the Tournament for her outstanding skill, scoring ability, and leadership on the court.

Meanwhile, the University of Kelaniya men’s basketball team also made a strong showing, qualifying for the quarterfinals and putting up a spirited fight before narrowly losing to the University of Colombo in a closely contested match.

The Kelaniya team displayed excellent teamwork, strategic play, and unwavering sportsmanship throughout the matches, overcoming tough opponents to reach the finals. Although missing the championship title, their efforts brought pride and recognition to the University’s dynamic sports culture.

The University of Kelaniya continues to strengthen its presence in inter-university sports, inspiring students to excel both on and off the court.
