University of Kelaniya Secures Bronze in SLUG 2025 Rugby with Commanding Victory

The University of Kelaniya powered its way to a bronze medal in Rugby at the Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG) 2025, defeating the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka with a convincing 29–05 win in the Consolation Final held on August 3, 2025, at the Niththawela Rugby Ground.
University of Kelaniya’s impressive total of 29 points came through five tries and two penalties, reflecting a well-balanced performance of both attacking flair and tactical discipline. From the outset, Kelaniya dominated possession and territory, capitalizing on scoring opportunities while maintaining a solid defensive line that limited Sabaragamuwa to a single try.
Despite missing out on the championship match, the University of Kelaniya regrouped with determination and delivered a clinical performance to claim third place in the tournament.
This bronze medal finish adds to the university’s growing list of achievements at SLUG 2025 and underlines the university's rising stature in inter-university rugby.
Kelaniya’s journey to the bronze medal was marked by a series of commanding performances. In the group stage, the team recorded resounding victories against South Eastern University of Sri Lanka (111–0), University of Vavuniya (91–0), and Wayamba University of Sri Lanka (62–06). In the quarter-final, they continued their dominant form with a 57–05 win over the University of Ruhuna. Although narrowly defeated by the University of Colombo in the semi-final (29–34), after leading 24–05 at halftime, the team bounced back with a determined 29–05 victory over Sabaragamuwa University to secure the third-place finish.
