University of Kelaniya Welcomes World University Games Participants at BIA, Katunayake

The University of Kelaniya proudly welcomed back undergraduate-athletes who represented Sri Lanka at the 2025 FISU World University Games held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. The welcome took place on July 30, 2025, at the Colombo–Bandaranaike International Airport, where university officials and staff gathered to receive the returning champions with great pride and appreciation.
Leading the official welcoming delegation were Senior Professor Sudath R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Chairman of the Sports Advisory Board, and Dr. P. Buvanendiran, Head of the Department of Sports and Exercise Science Unit. They were joined by Mr. Sameera Wijayagunaratne and Mr. Chathuranga Kularatne, Instructors in Physical Education, Department of Physical Education, who extended their heartfelt congratulations and appreciation to the athletes for their outstanding efforts and dedication on the global stage.
The University of Kelaniya was proudly represented by eight talented undergraduates in the Sri Lankan contingent. Notable performances were showcased by Rasara Wijesuriya of the Faculty of Science, who qualified for the Women’s 10000m and 5000m finals and established new National records in both events. In Athletics, Sayuri Mendis of the Faculty of Science won third place in the 400m Heats and qualified for the Semi-Finals. In badminton, Tharin Punchihewa of the Faculty of Computing and Technology secured an impressive straight-set victory in the mixed doubles event. In table Tennis, Thanushi Rodrigo of the Faculty of Science qualified for the main draw.
The university community commends these athletes for their commitment, passion, and exemplary representation of both Sri Lanka and the University of Kelaniya on the international stage. Their achievements are a source of inspiration and reflect the institution’s growing strength in integrating academic excellence with sporting success.
