“Confucius” Stage Drama Staged at the University of Kelaniya

The stage drama Confucius, written, directed, and produced by Emeritus Professor Sunanda Mahendra of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, was staged on August 27, 2025, at the Sri Dharmaloka Hall of the University. The event was jointly organized by the Department of Mass Communication, Arts Council, and the Communication and Media Unit of the University of Kelaniya.

The cast featured Mr. Kingsley Loos, Ms. Nihari Somasiri, Mr. Daya Sri Narendra Rajapaksha, Mr. Kithsiri Hawagamage, Mr. Anura Dahanayaka, Ms. Jayani Sarachchandra, Ms. Nayana Rajapaksha, Mr. Priyantha Samarathunga, Mr. Sarath Chandrarathne, and Mr. Janith Vipulaguna, while the music was composed by Mr. Navarathna Gamage.

It is noteworthy that this stage drama was written by Professor Sunanda Mahendra 32 years after his celebrated stage play Socrates. This latest production is a retelling based on the character of Confucius, the eminent philosopher who lived in China many centuries ago.

The event was graced by the presence of Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Senior Professor Uda Hettige, Chairman of the Arts Council; Senior Professor K. Karunathilake, Head of the Department of Sociology; Professor Oshantha N. Thalpawila, Head of the Department of Political Science; Senior Lecturer Dr. Manoj Jinadasa, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, along with the academic and non-academic staff members of the department; Senior Lecturer Dr. Manoji Harishchandra, Head of the Department of Philosophy; Senior Lecturer Dr. Dhammika Kumari Manatunga, Head of the Department of History; Senior Lecturer Dr. Nilantha Ramanayake, Head of the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education; Senior Lecturer Lanka De Silva, Head of the Department of Fine Arts; and Senior Lecturer Saman Rajapaksha, Director of the Communication and Media Unit. In addition, many other academic and non-academic staff members of the Faculty of Social Sciences, family members of Emeritus Professor Sunanda Mahendra, a large number of students of the University of Kelaniya, and a wide audience were present at the occasion.
