University of Kelaniya Mentors Guide Sri Lankan Students to Victory at 21st International Junior Science Olympiad 2024

In a remarkable achievement, three academics from the University of Kelaniya played a pivotal role in coaching a group of talented Sri Lankan students who shone brightly at the 21st International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2024.

Held from December 2nd to 12th in Bucharest, Romania, the prestigious event was organized by the Ministry of Education of Romania in collaboration with the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest and the University of Economic Studies Bucharest.

Six brilliant young Sri Lankan students, guided by the University of Kelaniya team, secured an impressive haul of medals: three silver and three bronze. This outstanding accomplishment underscores both the individual brilliance of the students and the University of Kelaniya’s unwavering commitment to fostering academic excellence.

The IJSO, renowned for celebrating excellence in the natural sciences, attracted participation from over 50 countries. It challenges young minds with rigorous theoretical and experimental tasks across physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics.

The leadership of Professor H.H. Sumathipala from the Department of Physics & Electronics, along with the dedication of mentors including Professor Mangala Ganehiarachchi from the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management and Dr. Chamila Kadigamuwa from the Department of Chemistry, University of Kelaniya, was instrumental in guiding the students to success. Since 2016, Sri Lankan students coached by University of Kelaniya academics have consistently excelled at this global event.
