IHTIFAL - 2025: A Celebration of Faith and Togetherness at the University of Kelaniya

IHTIFAL - 2025, a flagship event held during the holy month of Ramadan, was successfully hosted by the Association of Islamic Students (AIS) at the University of Kelaniya, on the 10th of March 2025 at the Sri Dharmaloka Hall, University of Kelaniya. Rooted in the Arabic word meaning "opening," IHTIFAL symbolizes the breaking of fast (Iftar) and embodies the spirit of unity, faith, and gratitude that defines this sacred month.

This initiative was held under the objectives of fostering unity and togetherness to create a platform that brings together students, faculty, and the wider university community to experience the essence of Ramadan and strengthen interpersonal bonds; promoting spiritual reflection to provide an environment that allows attendees to embrace the spiritual and reflective nature of Ramadan through prayer, fasting, and communal worship; encouraging intercultural understanding to educate non-Muslim participants about the significance of Ramadan and Islamic values, promoting harmony and mutual respect across diverse cultures and beliefs; enhancing the presence of the Muslim Majlis to strengthen the identity and influence of the Muslim Majlis within the university community through active engagement and impactful event organization; and celebrating the spirit of Ramadan to uphold the traditions of Ramadan by offering a space for breaking fast (Iftar), congregational prayer, and community interaction.

The event was graced by the presence of Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, as the chief guest, while other honourable guests, included Ash-Sheikh M. Arkam Nooramith, General Secretary, All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulama; Professor Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies; Prof. M. J. M. Razi, Senior Treasurer of the Association of Islamic Students; Dr. C. C. Jayasundara, Librarian; Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar; Heads of departments; and representatives from various student organizations at the University of Kelaniya.

IHTIFAL - 2025 served as a platform to share the blessings of Ramadan with the university community, bringing together students, faculty, and esteemed guests in a shared moment of reflection and spiritual connection. The event featured a traditional Iftar, followed by congregational prayers, fostering an atmosphere of togetherness and appreciation for the significance of Ramadan. Through this initiative, AIS provided a space to embrace values of generosity, compassion, and solidarity.

More than just an event, IHTIFAL stood as a testament to the power of faith in uniting people beyond cultural and academic boundaries. As participants broke their fast together, they strengthened the bonds of friendship and understanding, reinforcing the university’s commitment to inclusivity and harmony.

IHTIFAL - 2025 was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. As the University of Kelaniya continues to nurture diversity and unity, events like these remain essential in fostering a sense of belonging and spiritual enrichment for all members of the community.
