The awarding ceremony of the Lakshmi Happitiya and Don Dharmasena Memorial Scholarships was held on 11th August 2025 at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, University of Kelaniya.

Two final-year undergraduates, Ms. K. E. M. R. S. Ekanayake and Mr. U. S. J. Pathirana, both following the BSc Honours in Sports Science Degree program at the Faculty of Science, were awarded scholarships of LKR 60,000 each for the academic year 2022/2023, following selection as per the stipulated guidelines and Senate approval.

The scholarships were presented by Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University, who expressed her delight over the sports performances and achievements of university undergraduates. Senior Professor Sudath R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Chairman of the Sports Advisory Board, briefly outlined the purpose and significance of this scholarship.

Family members of the late Ms. Lakshmi Happitiya and Mr. Don Dharmasena, who currently reside in the USA, shared their happiness at being able to support Sri Lankan undergraduates. Mr. G. G. U. Saman Kumara, Director of Physical Education, emphasized the importance of such scholarships in enabling students to excel in both academic and sporting pursuits.
