Most Ven. Dr. Thích Nhật Từ Thero, awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Literature

Most Ven. Dr. Thích Nhật Từ Thero, one of the most outstanding contemporary Buddhist scholars, educators, and leaders from Vietnam, was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Literature by the University of Kelaniya at its 154th General Convocation, held on the 17th of November 2025 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).
The ceremony was presided over by the Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Chief Incumbent of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, Aggamahapandit Most Ven. Professor Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkitha Maha Thera.
The honorary degree was conferred in recognition of Most Ven. Dr. Thích Nhật Từ Thero’s lifelong dedication to advancing Buddhist education, promoting interfaith harmony, and integrating Buddhist values into contemporary society. Over more than three decades of distinguished service, he has become an inspiring figure whose intellectual contributions and compassionate leadership transcend national boundaries. His initiatives have enabled Vietnamese Buddhism to engage meaningfully with the global community, while his extensive publications, international lectures, and visionary projects have influenced Buddhist thought and practice across continents. Acknowledging these exceptional contributions, the University of Kelaniya deemed it timely and fitting to bestow upon him this prestigious academic honor.
The award was presented, and the citation was read by Ven. Chair and Senior Professor Madawachchiye Dhammajothi Thero, the Director of Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies.
Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, the Vice-chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Deans of the Faculties, Registrar, Librarian, Academic and Non-Academic Staff, graduands, and their families graced the event.
