Alumni Association of the University of Kelaniya Holds Its 37th Annual General Meeting

The Alumni Association of the University of Kelaniya successfully held its 37th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and get-together on the 22nd of March 2026, at the Indra Hotel, Kadawatha. The event was organized under the leadership of a dedicated executive team, featuring Mr Raja Premadasa, President; Ven. Senior Prof. Malwane Chandarathana Thero, Secretary; Dr S. C. Thushara, Treasurer; Prof. Nishan Sakalasuriya, National Organizer; Mr Nimal Mallawarachchi, Vice President; and Dr Chamila Siriwardene, Deputy Secretary.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of the Chancellor of the University of Sabaragamuwa and Founding President of the Association, Most Ven. Emeritus Prof. Kamburugamuve Vajira Thero, alongside the Association’s Patron, Ven. Senior Prof. Malwane Chandarathana Thero, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva. During the official session, Secretary Ven. Senior Prof. Malwane Chandarathana Thero and the Treasurer presented the annual and financial reports for 2025, both of which were unanimously approved by the assembly. A primary highlight of the organization's work is its extensive scholarship program, which currently grants approximately Rs. 3.6 million annually to support 150 students facing economic hardships. The team also outlined future development goals, including the modernization of the Dharmaloka Hall with 21st-century facilities, the provision of new sports equipment, and the upgrading of university canteens.

In recognition of academic and professional excellence, Excellence in Service Awards were presented to Prof. Shirley Lal, Prof. Rizvi Hassan, and Dr U. K. Abeywarna. Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor officially launched a new E-magazine (Editors, Prof. Anura Karunarathne, Dr Chamila Siriwardene, Dr Sujeewa Wijesiri, Dr Jani Samarakoon) designed to foster and showcase the creative talents of students across all university faculties. The event concluded with the successful appointment of 41 executive members and 61 All-Island Committee members and to continue the Association's mission of supporting the university community.
