Ambassador of Cuba Visits University of Kelaniya

Her Excellency Dr Patricia Lázara Pego Guerra, Ambassador of Cuba to Sri Lanka, visited the University of Kelaniya on 25th June 2026. During her visit, Her Excellency met with Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya; Senior Professor Patrick Ratnayake, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Dr Udara de Silva, Head of the Department of Modern Languages; and Dr Samanthi Jayawardena, Director of the Centre for International Affairs, on the same day at the Vice-Chancellor’s office.

Discussions focused on strengthening the longstanding bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and Cuba, with particular attention given to opportunities for academic collaboration, Spanish language education, cultural exchange, and the promotion of Spanish language and culture. The meeting highlighted the potential for enhanced cooperation between the two countries in the fields of higher education and cultural engagement.

Her Excellency also met with the academic staff and students of the Spanish Section of the Department of Modern Languages. The interaction was marked by enthusiasm and active participation from both the Ambassador and the students, resulting in a fruitful exchange of ideas on language learning, cultural understanding, international relations, and future collaborative initiatives.

As part of the visit, Her Excellency toured the Department of Modern Languages, Spanish Section, and the University Library, gaining further insight into the University’s academic environment and facilities.

The visit concluded successfully, reaffirming the shared commitment of both parties to fostering academic and cultural ties between Sri Lanka and Cuba.
