A capacity-building workshop for provincial journalists of the Gampaha Press Organization, organized by the Communication and Media Unit of the University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on November 14, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Staff Development Centre (SDC), University of Kelaniya.

The workshop, conducted under the theme “Towards a Knowledge-Empowered Professional Media Culture,” was organized under the supervision of Senior Lecturer Saman Rajapaksha, Director of the Communication and Media Unit.

This initiative aimed to enhance the professionalism of provincial journalists of the Gampaha Press Organization representing both electronic and print media.

The workshop featured three sessions conducted by distinguished speakers. Dr. Manoj Jinadasa, Head and Senior Lecturer of the Department of Mass Communication delivered an insightful lecture on “The Role of the Provincial Journalist in the Digital Media Age.” Senior Lecturer Amali Uthpala Nandasiri of the Department of Mass Communication, presented on “The Necessity of Ethical Practice in Media Reporting,” while Senior Lecturer Chinthaka Ranasinghe of the Department of Sinhala spoke on “The Significance of Language in Media Reporting.”

The event witnessed the presence of Mr. Sanjeewa Withanarachchi, Managing Director of Sandagiri Battery and Tyre Works, Kiribathgoda; provincial journalists of the Gampaha Press Organization from both electronic and print media; staff of the Communication and Media Unit; and students from the Departments of Mass Communication. Certificates of participation were awarded to all the provincial journalists who attended the workshop.
