Internship and Career Development Centre, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies Strengthens Industry Ties with Singer (Sri Lanka) PLC

The Internship and Career Development Centre of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singer (Sri Lanka) PLC on the 20th of November 2025. The ceremony was held at the Senate Room of the University of Kelaniya,
marking a significant milestone in strengthening the university’s engagement with leading corporate partners in Sri Lanka. Singer (Sri Lanka) PLC, a fully owned subsidiary of Hayleys PLC, has long been recognized as a trusted household name committed to offering Sri Lankan consumers world-class solutions in electronic items and home appliances. Through this partnership, the university aims to provide its undergraduates with enhanced exposure to real industry environments and practical learning opportunities.
The purpose of this MoU is to broaden internship and training opportunities for undergraduates of the University of Kelaniya while fostering the exchange of expert knowledge between the two institutions. In addition, the MoU seeks to encourage collaborative research initiatives in the field of business management, enabling students and academics to engage with industry professionals on projects that advance both theoretical and practical understanding. This partnership reinforces the University’s commitment to developing industry-ready graduates equipped with relevant skills and competencies for the fast-evolving corporate sector.
The ceremony was attended by several senior representatives of the University of Kelaniya, including Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University; Professor Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies; Mr. Dharmathilaka, Registrar of the University; and Dr. Chathuni Jayasinghe, Director of the Internship and Career Development Centre. Heads of Departments of the Faculty, internship coordinators from each department, and a number of academic staff members were also present, reflecting the institution’s strong support for strengthening academia–industry collaboration.
Representing Singer (Sri Lanka) PLC were Mr. Roshan Kulasuriya, Director – Human Resources and Business Integrations; Mr. Sampath Jayatilake, General Manager – Human Resource Operations; and Ms. Asinki Perera, Senior Assistant Manager – Human Resources. Their participation underscored Singer’s dedication to supporting educational development initiatives and contributing to future talent development within the country.
The MoU signing marks the beginning of a promising collaboration between the university and one of Sri Lanka’s most established and respected corporate entities. Both organisations expressed their commitment to working closely in areas of capacity building, internship facilitation and research collaboration, recognising the mutual benefits such partnerships create for students, academics and industry stakeholders alike. This initiative further strengthens the University of Kelaniya’s ongoing efforts to cultivate meaningful industry linkages that enhance the employability and professional readiness of its graduates.
