Japanese Calligraphy Workshop: A Journey into the Art of Brush and Ink

An inspiring Japanese calligraphy workshop, organized by the Japanese Unit of the Department of Modern Languages, University of Kelaniya, under the theme “A Journey into the Art of Brush and Ink,” was held on the 27th of August 2024, at the university premises.
The event, which aimed to enhance students' knowledge and appreciation of this timeless art form, was conducted by Mr. Nakashima Hoko, a lecturer from Toukai Gakuen University in Japan.
The calligraphy workshop provided hands-on experience for 100 BA Honors Japanese Studies students, featuring interactive sessions that enrich the overall learning experience. Participants were guided through the techniques of traditional calligraphy, learning to express the beauty and spirit of Japanese characters with brush and ink. The event provided a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in Japanese culture, deepening their understanding of the artistic traditions that continue to shape the modern world.
The workshop was graced by the presence of Prof. Dilrukshi Ratnayake, Professor in Japanese Language; and Mr. Senadeera Pathiraja Jayarathna; along with other attending staff members. Additionally, special gratitude was extended to Ven. Professor Nedalagamuwe Dhammadinna Thero, Head of the Department of Modern Languages, for his invaluable guidance in organizing the workshop.
