Third International Workshop on Advanced Mosquito Entomology

(full time -7 days - 19th to 25th of August, 2019)

 

BACKGROUND

The Molecular Medicine Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Ragama, Sri Lanka, is organizing a Workshop on Advanced Mosquito Entomology covering a broad spectrum of aspects in the field of medical and molecular entomology.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To study entomological techniques for field collection and identification of different mosquito species
  2. To preserve mosquito specimens
  3. To identify and detect parasite/pathogens in vector species using conventional and molecular-based methods
  4. To organize a laboratory for molecular entomological assays
  5. To study maintenance of an insectary, mass rearing of mosquito vectors and sex separation methods
  6. To familiarize arthropod-containment facilities and study microinjection of mosquito vectors
  7. To study effect of chemical, physical and biological properties in aquatic habitats on abundance of vector mosquitoes

DATE AND VENUE

The workshop will be held for seven days at the Molecular Medicine Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Ragama, Sri Lanka.

PARTICIPANTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The workshop is open for Entomologists, Research Officers, Entomological Assistants attached to the Ministry of Health, academic/technical staff and post graduate students of universities.

Minimum qualification:

  1. B.Sc degree (general/special in Zoology, Botany or other related subject) or
  2. Diploma in Medical Entomology

RESOURCE PERSONS

Highly qualified academic staff members from Universities of Sri Lanka. Depending on the availability of funds at least one foreign expert will be invited.  

TRAINING CONTENT

The workshop includes lectures, laboratory based practical and field classes covering the following topics:

  1. Entomological techniques for field collection and identification of different mosquito species for dengue, malaria, Japanese Encephalitis (JE) etc
  2. Preservation of larvae, pupae and body parts of adults mosquito specimens
  3. Identification and detection of parasite/pathogens in vector species using conventional and molecular-based methods (qualitative PCR and quantitative real time PCR)
  4. Organization of a laboratory for molecular entomological assays
  5. Maintenance of an insectary, mass rearing of mosquito vectors, different sex separation methods and arthropod-containment facilities
  6. Microinjection of mosquito vectors
  7. Effect of chemical, physical and biological properties of aquatic habitats on abundance of vector mosquitoes

REGISTRATION FEE

The course fee for 7 days is LKR 25,000 per local participant, Rs. 10,000 for a registered Post Graduate Student and US$ 200 for a  foreign participant.

The course fee covers the participation in the workshop, training materials and lunch/refreshments during coffee breaks. Accommodation will have to be borne by the participants.

Local participants - Payment should be made to in the form of a crossed cheque, made  payable to “Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya” and mailed to the course coordinator.

Overseas participants - Transferring funds to the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya (Information will be provided after the selection process).

Application form for the workshop is given below. Applicants can submit their completed application form to the Course Coordinator before 1st of August, 2019.Incomplete application forms will not be accepted. Selected applicants will be informed.
